Q: I find the information in your articles practical and informative for both parents and teachers. As a second grade teacher in the Moreno Valley, how can I get more parents of my students to participate in the children’s school life and in the classroom?
A: I believe most parents strive to be involved in their children’s education and school life, however they may not have the time or direction to know how to best support their children’s school or teacher. The best way to get parents involved is to show them the ways they can participate. Try reaching-out to parents and helping them realize that their role is as important a role as the classroom teacher’s. If not already in place, set-up your own classroom website with updated student and classroom information. Add and a wish-list of things your classroom needs to be more successful. Ask for parent-volunteers to participate in activities and field trips. You’d be surprised at the response you’ll get if you’re specific. Sending home a weekly newsletter is another way to connect with parents. Dr. Kim Marshall, Headmaster of St. Margaret’s School in Palm Desert, said, “Once parents understand the positive benefits of school participation, they can work closely with teachers and school administrators to ensure student success academically, socially and emotionally. Parents need to know how their participation can benefit the whole school.”
