Get Acquainted with Teacher

Q: I want to start a good relationship with my son’s teacher so he can have a better school experience this year than he did last year. Although he has some behavior challenges, I want his new teacher to see and focus on his strengths first, rather than his behavior challenges. When and how do you suggest I introduce myself to his teacher to discuss my son?

A: Make contact with your child’s teacher during the first week of school, or if possible before school starts. This demonstrates that you genuinely care about your child’s education. Discuss your son’s particular interests, positive attributes and learning style preferences. Avoid talking about any negative qualities at the first meeting; this could put premature or unnecessary expectations in the teacher’s mind before she’s had a chance to get to know your son. Jennifer Walton, highly regarded Resource Specialist at Sacred Heart School in Palm Desert, believes that a child’s education and well-being is dependent on a positive line of communication between school and home. She said “It is so often that parents are only contacted to report their child’s negative behavior, but we need to remember that the positive deserves much more recognition and attention. Frequent communication allows home and school to work as a team to educate the whole child.” Lastly, the difference between good schools and superior schools has proven to be the level of parent involvement and support.
