Set Example, Get Kids Moving

Q: I’m worried about my children’s weight and there activity level. I would like to keep them more active during the summer but I don’t always have time because of my hectic schedule. I work full-time and my kids are home alone a lot. Do you have any suggestions for keeping them active?

A: First of all stop using your busy schedule as an excuse for the lack of activity in your family’s lives. Most people have hectic schedules that can make finding time for fitness difficult. However, there is always a way to work exercise into your lives. Try setting up a chore list for them to do while you’re at work. Not only are you keeping them somewhat active, the housework is getting done thus freeing up more time for more family activities. Plan outings that involve movement instead of going out to eat or sitting in a movie for two hours. Go to the park, organize a game of softball or go for an early morning hike. The bottom line is to make physical activity a priority in your daily life. When parents make health and fitness an important part of their lives, their children are much more likely to emulate that in their own lives. By doing so you end up helping both your children as well as yourself remain healthy and active for years to come.
