Q: What can I do to help my children stay active socially and academically over the summer?
A: While summer is a time for rest and relaxation, it is also a time to stay involved as a learner. The student who carelessly passes away two months of summertime playing video games may have difficulty getting back into the swing of school come September. Social and academic gains made in the previous school year can be lost when the behaviors and strategies they learned are not applied and practiced during the long summer break. Keep your children sharp and engaged over the break. Summer work may include reading a certain number of books from a reading list and keeping a journal. Help your children become experts on something this summer by starting a collection. Encourage them to visit Web sites, view videos and look for library books to learn more about their new interest. Get your child a magazine subscription. There are numerous magazines that are targeted to young kids and preteens. Day camps also provide an opportunity to build independence and to pursue new friendships.
