Question: I am going into the 10th grade, and I am really starting to stress about getting into a college. I am a straight "A" student, but I haven't participated in any extracurricular activities. My friends say that colleges don't just care about grades. How important is it for me to be involved in some extracurricular activities?
Answer: It is important for you to realize that colleges do care about your academics, but they also pay attention to your life outside of the classroom. Extracurricular activities show a complete picture of who you are and reveal a great deal about your interests, commitment and dedication.
More specifically, they show a college your nonacademic interests, how you have made a meaningful contribution to something, whether you can manage your time and priorities, and what diversity you can bring to the student body.
You should try to get involved in a few activities that are of interest to you. Keep in mind that colleges would rather see a student committed to one activity for a few years rather than 20 activities for short periods of time.
