Q: Hey Brent, you gave a motivational talk to my football team in the fall about thinking positively and using imagery to improve our offense. I applied those ideas to my tennis game, and it worked for awhile, but I’ve hit a wall. How can I continue moving up the ladder on my tennis team and improve my grades in my AP (Advanced Placement) classes? Do you have any other techniques that I could use to improve my game and grades?
A: Since you play tennis, you may have heard of Jimmy Connors, the great tennis legend. Connors said, “Winning is at least 90 percent mental.” You can have all the ability in the world but without self-discipline and self-control, chances are you will never reach your full potential. Most people have heard that goals help people become successful, but few people know why or how goals work. Goals take a monumental task like becoming an excellent tennis player and break it down into small baby steps like practicing your top-spin serve each day until you meet your desired goal. Goal setting techniques are used by athletes and top achievers in all fields. Set goals that can be measured by the end of the day, week, month and end of the year. Once you begin to set measurable goals and identify the date of completion, you will experience increased motivation and excitement as each goal is successfully accomplished.
