Unfocused Kids should be Checked for ADHD

Q: At my eight-year-old son’s parent-teacher conference, his teacher said that when he does not receive individual attention he seems unable to concentrate and is very impulsive. He’s very bright but his behavior and lack of focus is affecting his school work. He’s always been hyperactive but now it’s affecting his grades. I don’t want to put him on drugs, what can I do?

A: It’s important to know if the behaviors you’re describing are also occurring at home. If so, these behaviors may be associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). An evaluation is required by a trained professional who is able to diagnose ADHD and Learning Disorders. Identifying the areas of strengths and weaknesses are the first steps in developing a roadmap for your child’s success. However, many parents disregard the warning signs because they think medication is the only option. But medication should be the last alternative after all other interventions have been exhausted. Behavior and educational challenges interfere with learning and social relationships. In nearly all instances, these difficulties continue through adolescence and often into adulthood. As a parent you need to do everything you can to make certain your son has the best chance to succeed as he grows up. Start now, academic and social demands only increase with age. Early intervention is the solution.
