Question: As a parent, I have considered sending my child to a private school. In your opinion which do you recommend?
A: There are no straightforward answers to this question. It really depends on your child’s individual needs. One must consider many factors such as the facility, class size, teaching methods, school budget, and administrative staff. I contacted Vincent Downey, former principal of Palm Desert High School and presently the Head of School at Marywood-Palm Valley School for the past eleven years since he has experienced both environments as an administrator. Mr. Downey states, “A private school is driven by a mission, and parents should make sure the school’s mission statement matches the outcomes they desire for their children. Some private schools offer religious training, others offer a true college-prep environment, most have a smaller school environment, which allows for better relationships and accountability with the administrators, faculty members and the student body. He also discussed the fact that with the deep budget cuts this year in the State’s budget, public school students will not have the same opportunities as a school like Marywood-Palm Valley School.”
