Question: From the time my daughter was born with Cerebral Palsy 2 years ago, I’ve felt like her health care has steadily declined. When I take her to an appointment, she usually screams the entire time. The doctors are anxious to get us in and out of the office quickly, and don’t really give her their complete attention. When I voice a concern, they usually minimize it. I feel like her doctors aren’t listening to me. Any recommendations?
A: Being prepared when you meet with care providers is essential. For example, when we attend the Spina Bifida Clinic for our son, we prepare by putting together poster boards with pictures and videos of our boy that illustrate what we are trying to convey. We’ve learned that children’s behaviors are often not represented in the doctor’s office due to their age, stress or tiredness. It has been our experience with specialists that when they see that you have taken the time to prepare for the appointment, they appreciate it and give you the respect you deserve and a little extra time and attention. Going forward, understand what represents an appropriate level of care and be able to judge the care your child is receiving. Good communication between you and the doctors is crucial for both the health of your daughter and your peace of mind. Lastly I encourage you to join a local support group and search the internet to find resources available to match your child’s specific needs.
