Get Parents Involved In Classrooms

Question: As a new first grade teacher, how can I get more parents involved and volunteering in the classroom?

Answer:  When speaking at Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) Meetings, one of the biggest complaints I hear from parents is that the same parents always volunteer.  While most parents strive to be involved in their children's education and school life, they may not have the time or direction to know how to best support their children’s school or teacher. The best way to get parents involved is to show them the different ways they can participate. Try reaching-out to parents and helping them realize that their role is as important a role as the classroom teacher’s.  If not already in place, set-up your own classroom website with updated student and classroom information.  Sending home a weekly newsletter is another way to connect with parents.  You may want to learn about what the parents' hobbies and gifts are so that when you’re planning activities, you can contact these parents.  I hope this is a great school year for everyone, with super parent involvement!
