Confirm ADHD with comprehensive test

Question: I have often wondered if my high school senior has ADHD and is not meeting her potential due to her concentration problems. People have mentioned over the years that they think she may have ADHD. She always requires more time to finish tests and schoolwork. Should I undergo testing to confirm a diagnosis? How is what you offer different from what a therapist can do for me?

Answer: One of the most important things you can do to help your daughter get the best education is to understand how she learns — especially if you are concerned that she may be struggling in school. The initial step in determining whether your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is to seek a comprehensive evaluation. Once you have a final evaluation, you may request a 504 Plan which can assist your child in achieving academic success by identifying the modifications and accommodations needed. Following the assessment, utilizing a therapist who specializes in ADHD can be helpful in advocating for your child, facilitating effective problem-solving in school and home environments and assisting the child in developing executive functions such as organization and impulse control. Kimberley Dubeau, a marriage family therapist in Palm Desert, stated, "It is extremely important for parents and teachers to collaborate efforts in providing appropriate expectations, guidelines and structure for a child with ADHD. Understanding your child's strengths and weaknesses are a first step in creating accommodations to help a child with ADHD succeed."
