Stickers great for motivating kids

Question: My son's elementary school teacher used a sticker chart to work on improving his behavior at school. This chart worked very well at school and I'd like to try to implement one at home. How do I make one of these charts to encourage my son to do his chores?

Answer: Behavior Modification charts are great ways to motivate children toward good behavior. These charts are not only successful tools, but are easy to design. Many parents like to use stickers or stars to track their child's progress towards a particular behavior. In order to clarify the expectations of the chart, it is best to limit the amount of topics for the child to work on. Some topics may include: brushing your teeth, cleaning your room, starting homework at a certain time, or finishing dinner. Parents need to decide what is a realistic amount of stars or stickers their child needs to earn. Try to keep the number to an encouraging amount so that your child does not become discouraged.

As children watch their stickers or charts build up, they become excited for the reward that awaits them. It is up to the parents to decide on the reward, which does not have to be a monetary prize. Some great rewards are a favorite dinner or a dessert, or a day out with a parent to a special place.
