Encourage kids to go above, beyond

Question: We are concerned about our high school student, who seems to be content with satisfactory performance. We know he is extremely intelligent but sometimes makes bad choices and has a lack of motivation. How can we help?

Answer: Many youngsters that I work with are not meeting their full potential. They are falling short of what they are capable of accomplishing, usually making excuses for why they fall short of their true ability. I remember from a young age my father encouraged me to pursue new goals and go beyond where I felt comfortable. This was true in all areas whether it was relationships with people, sports, school ... etc. He instilled values and a work ethic in me that made me strive to improve and be a better person. Parents ought to support their children by leading them in a positive direction to improve their lives. Teach your kids to stay on task and find ways they can use their unique gifts and talents. Try to substitute his less desirable behaviors with more positive ones, and a more optimistic attitude may soon develop.
