Math problems? A tutor may help

Question: My child is having a lot of problems doing his math homework. It is a struggle each night to get him to sit down and complete it. How can I help him enjoy math and stop fighting me to do it?

Answer: It is first important to understand whether your son is struggling with the math concepts themselves, or if he is just unmotivated to complete his work. You may want to speak with his teacher to see if he is demonstrating difficulties with completing his math work at school. If he seems to be doing fine at school, then most likely he just needs some extra guidance and motivation at home. Since what was taught at school may require a different approach for a child, he may simply need some tutoring to help him understand math better.

I would recommend that you contact a local learning center, like Sylvan, that can assess your son’s math skills. They would be able to give you detailed results and a plan of action. If he appears to be struggling not only in math but across many different academic subjects, you may consider having him evaluated for a psycho−educational assessment. Many people are unaware that dyscalculia (math disabilities) exists and can be treated.
