Start your Kid’s Day Right

Q: My daughter rarely eats breakfast in the morning because we are always rushing off to school or she says she’s not hungry. How important is it to eat breakfast in the morning, and is it really "brain food?"

A: Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day and evidence suggests that it really does help kids learn and perform better academically. Breakfast really means a break from your fast when you wake each morning from a night of sleep. A fresh supply of blood sugar is needed-which is the basic fuel for our brains. In order to have sustained brain power, the first meal of the day should be rich in protein and good carbohydrates. Here are some tips on how to incorporate breakfast into your daughter’s morning routine. Try setting your alarm 15 minutes earlier to allow more time for breakfast. Choose foods that require little preparation. If you have to, eat on the run with a breakfast bar, piece of cheese or fruit. If your daughter isn’t hungry, try to offer her juice or a fruit smoothie. Most importantly, set a good example by eating breakfast yourself.
