Get Child on a Reading Program

Q: All that my son wants to do is play video games and watch television. How can I get my nine-year-old to read more?

A: Reading, like any skill worth learning, takes practice. I suggest that a specific time be set aside each evening for reading. This practice creates consistency and teaches children discipline. As time goes by his skill level will naturally increase along with his confidence. Eventually the practice of reading will shift from a have-to to something pleasurable he’ll look forward to doing. By extension, he may learn how to acquire other valuable skills in the future by applying this same process. One of the many roles of a parent is that of a mentor. Therefore, your parental guidance is imperative. By taking this time with your child he’ll know that reading is something special and important. You’ll need to assist him with difficult phrases, words and comprehension, and your encouragement will be invaluable. By following this approach, you’re not only instilling the importance of reading, you’ll be giving your child lessons on how to learn for a lifetime.
