Q: My 15-year-old daughter is an excellent athlete who plays on the golf team for her school. She is able to focus extremely well while playing golf, but is struggling to focus during exams. Do you have any suggestions?
A: I am sure your daughter understands the importance of concentration on the green. To address challenges maintaining her concentration during tests, she can apply what all successful athletes must master to realize the same successes during tests-focus on the task at hand. If an athlete lacks concentration, their athletic abilities will not be effectively or efficiently applied to the task. In Brian Mackenzie’s series of books on "Peak Performance," he states that one way to maintain focus is to set goals for each competition. The athlete will have an overall goal for which she will identify a number of objectives that help her focus on specific aspects of the task. To apply this concept, a student must develop a routine for test-taking. These may include the weeks prior to, night before, the morning of, and post examination routines. If these routines are appropriately structured, they can effectively aid in concentration. I truly believe that preparation and an established routine will only increase the likelihood of your daughter’s success and ability to focus on and off the green.
