Support Groups Help

Question: My husband and I have just had a daughter who’s been diagnosed with Down syndrome. As new parents, we feel overwhelmed and even a little guilty. Can you give us any advice that might be helpful?

Answer: Having a child who is different in any way is always a challenge for parents. Down syndrome and other birth maladies usually indicate that the development of the child can be far from the norm. For your peace of mind and that of close family members, it is so important to not compare your child’s growth and development through the years with that of other children. It can create needless disappointment. Check your area for local support groups to communicate with other parents who are facing the same challenges. They are discovering, as you will, that with the help of community, family, psychologists and medical practitioners, life may not be as daunting as it seems right now. Most important is to not let this problem with your child deter you from being a loving parent. This can be one of life’s richest experiences for both you and your daughter. I have always felt that children who come into this world with challenges and disabilities are special people. Since you are just beginning your role as new parents, it is especially important to invite and let in all family members to lend their support.
