How to Pick a School

Q: I am having a difficult time trying to decide where I should send my daughter to kindergarten in the fall. I want her to go to a private school so she can get a good education while in a Christian environment. Do you believe the private schools are high-quality here in the desert, and are the spiritual and educational gains she’d make over attending a public school worth the financial commitment?

A: We have excellent private schools available to us in the Coachella Valley. Having a child attend a private religious school may be preferable for families who want their kids to get an education that’s aligned with their religious beliefs. Mrs. Ferris, principal of Christian Schools of the Desert, said, “I think we have a fabulous, well-rounded program. Our goal is to support our parents in training their children to think, speak, and act Biblically. We encourage our students to grow to their potential spiritually, academically, physically, and socially.” Before placing your child, it’s important to consider her strengths, weaknesses, learning preferences, your family’s faith and financial situation before making a decision. Additionally, ask yourself if the school offers all of the services and resources your child needs to be successful. As your daughter matures, you may need to reevaluate her educational plan in order to meet her individual needs and personality.
